How to ask visitors to pay for your content with a tweet

How do you make more money from your charity website’s content? That can be very hard, especially if you are giving away useful information for your service users, clients or supporters.
How can you give something away that you want to distribute, but which you would like to indicate has some value, or at least has incurred a cost, albeit modest, to your charity?
It might be more effective to consider something other than a monetary value. How about asking visitors to pay with a tweet?
What is the value of a tweet? Of course it depends who the person is who is going to send the tweet. How many followers do they have, and are any of them likely to be interested in and supportive of your charity?
To some extent this doesn’t matter. You’ve gained a modest amount of coverage for content that previously you were giving away completely. It is a numbers game too: hundreds of people tweeting an acknowledgement of your information could start to generate further interest in your offering.

How to implement pay with a tweet

Fortunately, this system can be set up quite quickly. Here is one demonstration of how to do it using the Pay with a Tweet plugin for a WordPress site:

This is one of WPbeginner‘s more rapid walkthroughs, so the task is probably best left to your web developer.
There are, of course, other WordPress plugins that offer a similar service, such as OnePress Social Locker.
It is important to consider which content you will test this out on. It only works for downloads, rather than any content on a web page. Perhaps start with some of your more popular downloads, so that you can see quickly if it is working well for you, and whether or not it is causing some people to shy away from downloading the document.
