Ottawa furniture-art designer Michael Alexander Crabtree of MAC-d has teamed up with film actress Shannon Elizabeth to create an exclusive limited-edition collection for charity.

The collection is set to launch at this year’s Starkey Hearing Foundation Gala held in St. Paul, Minnesota, an event that raised $7.6 million last year.

The concept behind this business is a different to most. This is a business that puts others first, this is a business that’s main focus is to help those less fortunate. A significant portion of the profits from this high-end collection will be donated to the Starkey Hearing Foundation, the charity chosen by Shannon herself. MAC-d’s donation goal is $100,000 but will strive to substantially increase that amount.

GLAAD has paid tribute to Glee star Cory Monteith, who passed away during the weekend.

“We mourn the loss of our friend Cory Monteith, whose support of LGBT youth and his work to end bullying served as an inspiration to countless young people,” stated GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz. “Losing such a strong ally at a young age is heartbreaking, but we are thankful for the many lives he touched through his work and advocacy. Our hearts go out to his family both at home and on the set of Glee.”

The young star was part of a powerful storyline from the beginning of Glee. His character, Finn Hudson, showed animosity towards fellow New Directions group member Kurt Hummel, bullying him and using an anti-gay slur towards him during an argument but eventually, the quarterback apologized and stood up for Kurt against bullies. As the show progressed, Finn and Kurt became close friends and brothers when their parents married. Following graduation, Finn returned to co-direct the New Directions glee club with Mr. Schuester.

Ryan Gosling has spoken out about keeping pigs in small cages in an article he wrote for The Globe and Mail.

“Currently, mother pigs are kept in these cages called “gestation crates” for four months while pregnant, moved to another cage to give birth, reimpregnated and put back into a gestation crate for the cycle to repeat," he wrote. "It adds up to years of immobilization and millions of smart, inquisitive animals relegated to iron maidens.

“The process has been criticized by veterinarians, animal protection advocates, consumers and even major food retailers as inhumane and unnecessary. Tim Hortons, for example, announced recently that it is working – alongside 60 other major food companies – to eliminate these cages from their supply chain entirely.

Famed artist Erik Wahl created a painting at an event in West Hollywood in June 2013, which was a celebration to launch his new book ‘UNthink.’

Twilight star Nikki Reed and celebrity musician Paul McDonald were event hosts, and did a musical performance onstage before Erik Wahl came up and created modern painting of Einstein in front of the audience!

Currently being auction on CharityBuzz.com, proceeds from the painting benefit After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles, which offers art programs to inner-city youths from low income communities in LA.

Today is World Population Day, and in recognition the United Nations Foundation Founder and Chairman Ted Turner released the following statement.

“From the beginning, the UN Foundation has believed in the tremendous potential of investing in adolescent girls. Today, there are more than 500 million girls in developing countries, and these girls have the opportunity to shape our future, if we help give them the opportunities to shape their own lives. These girls face tremendous challenges – they are often taken out of school early, married at a very young age, vulnerable to violence, and with limited access to quality reproductive health care, often become pregnant before their bodies are ready. As a result, pregnancy is the leading cause of death among girls aged 15-19 in developing countries.

“The consequences of adolescent pregnancy reverberate throughout a girl’s life, not only impacting her, but her children and the generations that follow. But we can change this: access to reproductive health care (Millennium Development Goal 5), including comprehensive sexual education and voluntary family planning, is a cost-effective solution that empowers girls to choose their path in life. When girls are given the information, tools and services they need to plan their families, they are better able to stay in school and pursue employment, lifting themselves out of poverty. This leads to healthier and stronger families, more prosperous and sustainable communities, and more peaceful and secure nations. It’s not only the right thing to do; it’s a smart investment.

UNICEF UK Ambassador Eddie Izzard has been reporting live from Domiz refugee camp in Northern Iraq, where he’s warned of a hidden crisis for Syrian refugees in the country.

The camp was originally designed for 15,000 but is now home to 45,000 people. This number continues to grow as families flee the conflict in Syria.
