Online donations continue to pour in to Asian floods emergency

Charities are still receiving large volumes of online donations from people keen to support the response to the Asian floods disaster.

Disasters Emergency Committee Chief Executive Brendan Gormley reported yesterday evening that about £500,000 was being donated online to the appeal every hour.

Amazon.com's online total passes $6 million

Amazon.com has handled $6,237,381.12 in online donations via its site for the American Red Cross's work in the wake of the South Asian floods appeal.

The total was given in 96,161 donations via Amazon.com's Honor System. Amazon.com is waiving its usual commission on such gifts.

It reached the $5 million mark at midday on 30 December.

Yahoo.com raises $876,850 online for American Red Cross appeal

Yahoo.com has begun handling online donations to the American Red Cross and is already nearing its first $1 million.

By 14.00 today, 9,385 donations totalling $876,850 had been made online. The average value of gifts therefore is an impressively high $93.43.

£15,000 a minute donated to DEC via phone and Web

The DEC Earthquake/Tsunami disaster appeal fund this morning stood at £32 million, up £7 million overnight.

This morning the DEC was receiving around £15,000 a minute in donations via the phone and Web.

Public response to DEC appeal reaches £30 million

By late night on 30 December, The Guardian reports that the UK public had donated £30 million by phone and Internet to the DEC's Tsunami/Earthquake appeal, the most rapid response to any UK charity appeal to date.

CAF's Allaboutgiving site shut down by surge to donate

Charities Aid Foundation has had temporarily to shut down its allaboutgiving.org site due to the volume of people trying to access it to donate to charities involved in responding to the South Asian floods disaster.

A notice on the front page of the site which promotes tax-efficient giving to charity states:

Reuters reports that people in many countries have been quick to give to the emergency appeals set up to fund relief work for those affected by the earthquake/tsunami disaster on 26 December

Bloggers promote giving to emergency appeal

Bloggers have played an important part in promoting the different ways of giving to the Asian floods emergency appeals and in linking people to information on the disaster such as lists of missing people.

Over half of FTSE 100 donate to South Asian floods appeal

The Times reports that more than half of the companies in the FTSE 100 have donated money or services to the South Asian emergency relief effort.
