Is Save the Children missing a trick with Kroo Bay?

Submitted by simoncollings on 25 June, 2008 - 08:41.

If you can’t take donors to see your programme 'in the field', then perhaps creating a virtual experience is a substitute. That at least is the thinking behind Kroo Bay, a mini-site created by Save the Children UK, which takes you into the life of a community in Freetown, Sierra Leone. www.savethechildren.org.uk

The site allows you to take in a 360 degree panorama of the slum, and to hear the stories of some of the residents who appear before you. Some of these stories are conveyed through video.

Rachel Palmer from SCF is talking about the site at a One World peer learning event on 2 July (contact anna.cohen@oneworld.net for details.)

When I was first emailed about the site I thought it was pretty cool. I donated £15 to see what would happen, and selected the option of email as my preferred communication medium. By return I recieved a nice thank you email – automatically generated. And since then? Nothing.

Maybe I’m a one off. Perhaps some glitch meant I fell out of the system. These things can happen. But if other donors have had a similar experience then SCF is missing a trick. Great looking websites which win awards don’t translate into donations unless contacts are followed up, involved, and asked to give again. Is my experience with Croo Bay unique or does anyone else have a similar story?

I'm signed up!

Hi Joe, thanks for the clarification and apologies for the delay in responding - I've been on leave. The updated site looks great and I've signed up for email updates. Look forward to tracking the progress. Simon

Kroo Bay email list

Hi Simon

I work at Save the Children and was sorry to learn you hadn't received further contact from the site. I think as you say you must have fallen through a glitch in the system, as your database record indicates you opted out of email. If you'd like to get more Kroo Bay info, please drop us an email to that effect through the website, and we'll put you on the mailing list.

I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you we're relaunching the site in a few days, and will be putting much more focus on the online discussion activities, and some campaigning action relating to the global food crisis.

There will also be even more brand new content - including an update on how we're refurbishing the clinic in the slum - one of the poorest communities in the world. Plus some pretty hard-hitting stories about the impact on people's ability to access medical care, when their food bills have gone up by 50%.

Finally - thanks for your support of our project, and I look forward to seeing you in the discussion forums!

All the best

Joe Barrell
