City law firms helping to catch tax evaders?

Submitted by finbarcullen on 8 September, 2008 - 10:11.

I read a report over the weekend, announcing that HMRC was planning to use City law firms to catch tax evaders. Apparently, some of the world’s most expensive lawyers will help to clamp down on businesses and individuals who try to avoid paying tax.

While I am sure that none of your major donors have anything to worry about, it might help to give lawyers’ earnings a nice little boost over the next few years. The report claimed that those firms likely to benefit include Slaughter & May, Linklaters, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, and Allen & Overy.

Apparently, HMRC is currently experimenting with one of its middle-sized cases by asking a City firm to handle it. Nice work if you can get it, I am sure – very handy in these uncertain times.
