Charity event finances

I am completely new to fundraising and have some basic questions to ask. I am organising an event where all proceeds go to a charity. I have been told I do not have to be a registered charity as it is a one-off event but to set up a bank account I need to be a charity. What is the best way to go about this? Are there any other legal/tax issues I need to be aware of?
