Seeking advice

Submitted by markpinchen on 13 December, 2007 - 18:56.

I am located in Cramlington in Northumberland and seeking funding for a idea that I have had for a few years.

What I would like to to is allow the local area to learn many different martial arts for free, I have approached many of my martial arts friends that are willing to teach for free, but the down side is using the local sports centre, they charge a fee fir use of there room, this would allow people of all ages to learn something new, meat people and improve there health, I know many of the UK top martial artists have stopped teaching because it was costing them to teach, and although they love to teach, like most would not want to cost them for this privilege.

In my area and surrounding ones there seems to be many kids hanging round the streets with nothing to do, this kind of idea could give these kids a focus, many have done similar things with boxing, I see problems in the area not just anti social behavior and I also see a solution.

Hope some one can give some constructive advice.

Research

Done a fair amount research in the surrounding areas, average price off class £4.00, we could come off even at approx £2.00, but besides the reduced fee, we will promote the instructors class at our studio and theres at the Sports Center or any where else they teach, we dont intend to compete with other business or intensionally undercut, in fact the opposite we will promote others schools in return for a hour or so of there instruction.

As for times, to start with we will have 4 classes per day from 5pm to 9 pm and have not arranged times for weekends but still 4 classes per day + some one off classes from instructors that are from out side the area.

One of the advantages in this venture is that the instructors involved already have large student classes, so it not as if we need a big ad campaign to get noticed.

Had great feedback from students and instructors, possibly some local sports celebs on opening day + lots of media attention.

Which centres?

Hi,

Which centres have you asked and what price were they charging?

How often was the class planning to run?

Pete

Thanks to all for great advice

Thanks to all for great advice, got some info that in hindsight seems to be obvious, but maybe you got to verbalize the question before you the answer.

If you have a moment take time to look at

http://martialart.freehostia.com

for more detail, don't be too brutal with your criticism as it was just to get my message across, not to win design awards. We are looking for £3000 to get this up and running, after that we will self fund by small entry fee.

Any advice or help would be very welcome.

Cramlington

Do you live near Cramlington, I have not thought of sponsorship, any idea how I go about this, never done anything like this before.

Cramlington

No, I don't live around there, and I haven't been for a while, but:

The Officers Club / Petroleum have the Head Office there. I can't find much about them except that they employ 160 staff.

You might also want to try:

and in fact there are a lot of companies based, or with operations down in that part of town.
Didn't Wilkinson Sword used to be a big employer there too (perhaps not anymore)

All the best.

Have you considered

Mark

Have you considered finding another way to cover the costs of the venue hire? Perhaps someone would sponsor it, or you could get the people coming along to pay a small part towards it.

As I recall a number of companies have factories or units in Cramlington - perhaps if this was also opened up to their staff they'd be interested in providing the venue or costs of the venue?
