Hello. I work for a small charity and we desperately need to redesign our fundraising materials (posters, fundraising pack etc..). I am looking for some recommendations for low-cost design work. I have received some quotes from agencies who are charging in the region of £300 just do design a single poster. How do small charities manage to produce professional looking collateral materials on a very limited budget?
Many Thanks,
Sinead

Design on a Budget
Hi, Sinead
Firstly, good design is worthy of investment. £300-worth of good design could bring in 10, 20, 50 times the investment if properly used.
However, Martin is right - you can achieve a great deal without paying for it. Your own staff or volunteers who are computer literate can achieve quite a lot.
One of the "elephant traps" in this area is consistency - you can achieve a professional look by keeping logos, colours and font sizes the same across a range of publicity. Keeping it simple is a good rule, too - no more than three different fonts or text colours in a leaflet.
A local school or college may take you on as a project.
I also have a local Prontaprint franchise whose owner is very adept, and doesn't charge for the design - just the printing.
But it's not free, and it shouldn't be. I want my Prontaprint guy to be there when I need him!
Cheers
Gerry

Low budget
Hi Sinead.
We are a small charity, we always just design and produce stuff ourselves.
Between Microsoft Word and Microsoft Publisher we produce newsletters, leaflets, posters and advertising material.
Not just one member of staff - we get anything from 1 to 6 people involved with design.
I'd say figure out what can be done in-house. Pointless paying for something that can be done cheaper within the organisation.
Then see what you need that can't be done within the organisation - thats how far your budget needs to stretch.
There are a few organisations around where people offer their professional services for free or reduced rate. Volunteers sometimes use their other skills for the organisation too.
