Online Charity Forum

Hi,
Does anybody have any advice on setting up an online forum specific to their charity? Apparently it is very expensive to do through a web service... What about free 'groups' such as are available on Yahoo, are these appropriate?
Ideally I wanted a discussion forum with individual logins for interested supporters etc that can be moderated by me. I know some large charities use Yahoo to facilitate forums and groups, but not sure how these are set up.
