What to do after graduation (BA Business Management)

Submitted by danielguth on 31 March, 2008 - 07:47.

I've posted something similar to this before as a reply to a blog post but didn't get any response, any feedback or advice would be appreciated!

I've started looking for possible graduate jobs and similar possibilities, and it seems true, there just aren't too many out there, most of them require experience, sometimes even considerable experience.

So I was wondering what I should be doing.

I came across (in Scotland, as this is the place I really like to go) is a Charity Career Start programme (http://brucetaitassociates.com/jobsboard.aspx at the bottom), basically a 10 weeks internship with only expenses being paid. What do you think of this?

Do I even have a chance as a German (somebody actually suggested to me that I won't stand a chance because of my nationality) - I really would appreciate your honest reply to this question.

Or shall I consider doing a Master first while continue to do some volunteering, but which one would be advisable then, a master in marketing or something more specialised? Don't really want to do this certificate in fundraising as I somewhat fear that it would limit my choice of employment too much later on, and if I don't get a job in fundraising then it looks like a waste of money.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Daniel

How did it all work out?

Exactly as the title suggests, how did it all work out for you Daniel?

I had a business background and an Masters in Business Information Technology Systems before working in the third sector. You'll find your degree indispensible and your unique dissertation will really make you stand out from the crowd.

Good luck!

Many thanks Gerry, My spoken

Many thanks Gerry,

My spoken English is not as good as my written words but I keep improving.

The person who made the comment on nationality is himself a non-native speaker but his spoken English is better than my spoken English.

I've contacted Bruce Tait a few days ago regarding this internship, by email since the few times I had an interview in Scotland, I did have some minor difficulties understanding the accent, and it might be worse over the phone (I practice understanding it by watching Internet videos at the moment). But I haven’t seen a reply since then.

Best wishes,
Daniel

Next Steps

Hi, Daniel

Bruce Tait is a reputable company with a good network in the Third Sector. You could do much worse than talk to them, whether the internship route is right for you or whether an entry-level job would better suit your talents.

Who on earth made the comment about nationality? They should be shot!

If your spoken English is anywhere near as good as your written, I can't see your nationality being an issue at all! There are jobs within the sector where a heavy accent could be a problem, and that could apply whether you're Glaswegian, Geordie, Cockney or Scouse - let alone German!

There's been a flurry of good-looking jobs in scotland recently - I would recommend you start applying for ones you like the look of (and maybe a few you don't just for the practice). Leave the Certificate until you're in work, and if you are in a Fundraising role you'll find the certificate and membership of the Institute of Fundraising really useful.

Cheers

Gerry
