Cause related article in a magazine

Part of my job is to recruit new donors - I was thinking of advertising in a specific newspaper or magazine which core audience would know about the charity - I would include a cause related article with relevance to the magazine and include a Direct Debit request as part of the advert.

HAs anyone tried this and what has been their success rate or is this another case of testing the waters so to speak?
