Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in - mods please remove to a more appropriate place if I'm wrong.
We currently use MSMoney to record our financial transactions (our income is below £30k most years). We tweak it to fit our requirements but we're finding it less and less appropriate. I think from 1 Jan 2009, the start of our next accounting year, we'd like to move to something designed for charities. Our finances are becoming more complicated as we have launched an appeal (and therefore have restricted funds/donations now), and we hope to employ our first member of staff later this year
I've had a look at Paxton but wondered if there were any more.
Ideally we'd like something that we can also use to retrieve donor details for a database, and something that will also show us a simple income and expense report for a given period.
It would be useful to know if any accounting packages required an annual fee or if they have a one off payment, and how amendments/upgrades (eg to gift aid) are paid for.
Any suggestions please? Thanks in advance for help.

Quickbooks
I have used used Quickbooks for charity accounts and did find the charity/not for profit option a very good starting point. I found it very easy to use and adapt to a particular charity's needs.
Quckbooks also intergrates with DonorPerfect fundraising software. So that you can export GL transactions out of DonorPerfect straight into Quickboks. The ability to import and export data with Quickbooks is a great feature.

I wanted to start things properly form day one and this software really helped.I have got emails, document management, file sharing in one place as well as a specific charitable financial accounting module.
I have got their contact number if you want to get in touch to see if they can help you: it is 01707 262399. my contact name in there is Hamid who has been very helpful so far.
If you need any more information please let me know. I wish you all the best.

Quickbooks for charities?
I was going to direct you to a version of QuickBooks customised for charities which UK Fundraising featured in October 2003:
www.fundraising.co.uk/news/2003/10/12/new-edition-quickbooks-customised-...
However, a quick scan of maker Intuit's current website suggests it is no longer available. I've asked them and am waiting to hear back.
So I suggest having a look at the long list of accounting packages on Ivan Wainewright's:
www.itforcharities.co.uk/accounts.htm
I think I remember Ivan saying some time ago that he no longer keeps the site's data completely up to date, but it's still a useful starting point.
No Quickbooks edition for charities
I did get a reply from Melanie Vala, Marketing Manager at Intuit UK, makers of QuickBooks.
She said: "We don't have a specific Charity edition however when you install and set-up QuickBooks for the first time there's a step to choose what sort of business/industry you are. At this point you can choose the charity/not-for-profit option which will give you a recommended charter of accounts. This can be amended if it's not totally suitable but is helpful as a starting point."
