Mailing lists

Hi everyone,

Sorry to raise this old chestnut again.

We really need to increase our database - we're hampered by not having many people on it - and one of the ways that has been suggested is that we buy in a mailing list.

Can anyone talk me through this? Do they exist in such a way that we can find people likely to be supportive of our cause? Do we just buy the name and address and then send them whatever, or are there regulations about what we can send? How do we find one (a mailing list I mean)? And what are the likely costs? I'm forever receiving mail from organisations I don't support, but might, so I guess they must have got my name from somewhere.

If anyone can talk me through this in simple language I'd be everso grateful. (I've read a few other threads and see that some people are in favour and some against, so I know that not everyone thinks they're a good idea).

We also need to extend our scope - people think we only work in a small geographical area, but in fact we cover most of West Yorks and some of North Yorks and Lancs too.

Any help or pointers greatfully received.

Thank you

Sara
