Fundraising Square Dance/Hoe Down

in

Just a word of advice for anyone thinking of holding such an event: please go to your local square dance club or consult the national website to find a caller. All clubs affiliated to the British Association of American Square Dance Clubs are listed on www.uksquaredancing.com and all callers listed teach the standard syllabus, which is set by Callerlab, the callers' professional association. Give the caller and his club some publicity at your event and you may well find that you can develop links with the club over the following years and so increase support for similar events in the future. If you're thinking of organising a similar event overseas, the international square dance website, www.dosado.com has links to square dance associations and clubs in around 30 countries.

I mention this because if you run an Internet search for "square dance caller" you may also find people who are not qualified to teach the standard syllabus. If they don't use the standard syllabus, then what you learn at an event may not enable you to take part in other events. This is not to say that there aren't properly qualified callers advertising via their own websites; rather, please be careful and always ask "Do you teach the Callerlab syllabus?" If the answer is no or he doesn't know what you're talking about, you stand to waste your guests' time.

I am happy to answer any queries about suitable venues, catering arrangements, etc. from people interested in holding fundraising square dances.
