Kayaking around the British Isles and Service User Fundraising

Submitted by Rachel1974 on 15 December, 2009 - 14:59.

Hi,

I work for a charity supporting vulnerable and homeless people and one of our service users wants to kayak around the British Isles to raise funds for us.

I am new in the role of Community Fundraiser and our charity has only recently started to develop the fundraising department.

I have a couple of questions and concerns that I sincerely hope you will be able to help me with.

First of all, do any of you work with vulnerable people and do you let your clients raise funds for you? If you do, what procedure do you have in place and what type and level of support do you offer? If you don't, what were your thoughts and concerns that led you to that decision?

Secondly, I am looking for information around the different issues involved in planning an activity like this. Any info about health and safety concerns and sollutions, permits, insurance, planning, the total cost involved etc would be extremely helpful.

Any information or advice would be fantastic and a great help for me!

Many thanks,

Rachel

Hi Amanda, Many thanks for

Hi Amanda,
Many thanks for your reply and for your offer to share your experiences with this type of undertaking. In the mean time our service user has decided to take on a less intense activity so for the moment I will leave it at this, but again, thanks very much for responding!
All the best,
Rachel

Round Britain Challenge

Rachel

I have worked with a volunteer who completed a round Britain Challenge in his boat for the charity I worked for at the time. I'd be pleased to talk to you about the pros and cons. It raised over £10,000 and the volunteer went onto to do more fundraising with the charity. There are so many variables and it takes an amzaing amount of planning especially around the safety issues. My role was to support the fundraising element of the project and help the volunteer raise an amount of money that would reflect the challenge he undertook.
