I have recently embarked on organising my first fundraising event - a true learning experience in so many ways (cost and taxes in particular). Anyway, this provoked an idea in my mind but I need some help to know if and how it might work.
The plan, if this works well, is to repeat the event next year and select a different charity each time - but to retain the control of the event, i.e. not officially on the charity's behalf. The problem I had was with ticket sales and if I used the venues own box office as an individual the sales would be subject to VAT - without a VAT registration or registered charity status I am stuck. I first thought that if I set myself up as a charity I could solve that problem but looking on the Charity Commission website fundraising does not count as a charitable aim in its own right so I cannot start a charity. So I figured that some kind of 'not for profit' organisation would do the trick but this is where I am stuck; is that a viable option and what would I need to make that work?
All thoughts most welcome,
Matt
