The Importance of Being Incorporated and Other Necessities for Fundraising

I've been a major donor fundraiser for a number of years, but have recently started to work for an organisation which is establishing itself in Europe. There are no existing donors, very little money and no other fundraiser! I'm therefore presuming that trust fundraising is a good starting point, rather than going after individuals, at this early stage.

I've been informed that the entity isn't incorporated. Please could someone explain to me (and I know I'm being dim):

  • what it means to be incorporated

  • the importance of this in terms of fundraising?

Also, I'd be very grateful if anyone could let me know what else is an absolute necessity in order to begin approaching trusts. I've been sent the organisation's charter and bylaws.

This is all new to me. I've always worked for charities or organisations in which this is all organised. My job has just been to make the asks! Thanks very much for any advice that anyone can offer!
