Good Morning everyone,
I want to know why you can’t you get the Directory of Grant Making Trusts in an electronic format? The US Foundation Center now make their directory – which is 4 times the size of the DGMT – available on a searchable, printable CD. Hundreds of trusts/foundations have their own Web pages/indices – including the Charities Aid Foundation – and there are also commercial databases of US grantmaking companies/trusts available on the Web. But the UK Directory of Grant Making Trusts seems firmly rooted in the past.
I remember going to a CAF seminar on the Directory several years ago and asking the publisher the same question. The reply then was that it was under consideration.
I can understand the reluctance of trusts to appear in the various
directories now available, and maybe the CAF feels that a searchable CD is a step too far; but the CAF Directory itself always urges grantseekers to select trusts carefully, and a searchable CD would make it easier to do just that.
Does anyone else feel the same way?

This question comes up annually, or more frequently, and the answer is always the same. We are no further forward on this at all, despite it being ‘under consideration’. This directory shoud be on disk now, or if not, disks should be in preparation.
I agree that with the data available electronicaly it would be vastly more simple to trace and track suitable targets to pursue, thus cutting down on the number of spurious requests recieved by many of the trusts listed.
What can we do here?

For that matter, it would also be great to have the European Foundation Centre, the Foundation Library Center of Japan and the directory produced by the Canadian Center on Philanthropy go this route! Not only has the Foundation Center in the U.S. gone “electronic”…so has Taft (Prospectors Choice, etc.) and Orca. For that matter, I am sure that the publisher of DGMT and the others could find a partner in Taft, Orca or the Foundation Center to accomplish this task.
Speaking of which, can someone forward me the publisher’s address, phone and e-mail address?
