The European Central Bank has donated €110,500 to 17 charities across the euro area. The ECB launched its Charity Initiative a year earlier, aiming to support "well-known and respected charitable organisations" in the euro area that work on social and humanitarian issues.
The charities are selected with advice from the 17 national central banks of the euro area. One charity is selected for each country.
The money comes from fees earned by members of the ECB’s Executive Board and ECB staff for external work, such as media interviews and conference speeches.
The focus for 2011 was on organisations working in the area of social, educational and cultural integration within Europe. The charities received an equal sum.
The charity selected in Ireland was the Don Bosco Teenage Care Housing Association.
