A challenge to one member of staff has mushroomed into a company-wide year-long fundraising campaign for Diabetes UK by Bhs employees.
Diabetes UK Chairman, Sir Michael Hirst, yesterday received a £73,000 cheque from Bhs Director, Philip Green, at the company's head office in London. The cheque was presented following a year of fundraising activities by Bhs employees.
The company's support for the charity came about during a meeting in 2002 when Philip Green challenged Keith Smalls, Regional Development Director, to try and lose a few pounds. Keith agreed and also decided to take part in the Great North Run. Bhs chose to support Diabetes UK as Keith has the condition.
The challenge snowballed into a company-wide initiative to raise money for
the charity. Employees were involved in dozens of fundraising activities
to raise the money including, collecting tins in all 162 stores, selling
badges at checkouts, a clothing sample sale at head office in London and white water rafting.
