Institute to hold its first face-to-face fundraising conference
Published on 20 August 2010, by howardlakeThe Institute of Fundraising is to run a one-day conference on face-to-face fundraising, the first time it has held a conference on this method of fundraising. The event will take place on 30 September 2010 at Friends House, London.
Topics to be covered include advice and views on developing donors through face-to-face fundraising, benchmarking its effectiveness, and starting a face-to-face campaign from scratch.
The issue of hostility against face-to-face fundraising from some of the public, and some online and print commentators will be explored in a panel session at the event. Louise Richards, Director of Policy and Campaigns at the Institute, Ian MacQuillin, Head of Communications at the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association (PFRA) and Alastair McLean, Chief Executive, Fundraising Standards Board, will be taking part in this discussion.
Richard Verden, Head of Individual Giving, British Red Cross and Chair of this event, said that he hoped that the event would help raise awareness of the benefits of face-to-face fundraising and its best practice standards. @Face-to-face fundraising is a key element in British Red Cross fundraising strategy and will continue to be in the future", he added.
Mick Aldridge, Chief Executive of the PFRA, commented: @Face-to-face is one of the few methods of fundraising that is holding its own during the recession with some charities reporting that it’s the only donor recruitment method that works for them. Yet some people within the charity sector continue to refuse to acknowledge that face-to-face is an integral part of the fundraising mix. That’s why it is so important that charities and agencies are coming together at this conference to share what works for them and to reinforce the case for investing in face-to-face fundraising."
The event, 'Face-to-Face Fundraising: Effectively and Sensitively Communicating with Existing and Potential Supporters' costs £175 for individual members of the Institute of Fundraising, £225 for not-for-profits, and £275 for commercial organisations.

PFRA publishes guidance video on street fundraising
Published on 23 August 2010, by howardlakeThe Public Fundraising Regulatory Association (PFRA) has published a best practice video about street fundraisers for council licensing officers and town centre managers. It is designed to let them know what to expect of fundraisers visiting their areas under the terms of a site management agreement.
The video has been published in a new best practice section on the PFRA website, which also explains the solicitation statement and the ‘three step’ rule.
About Face – A guide to street face-to-face fundraising from PFRA on Vimeo.
Nick Henry, PFRA’s head of standards, said: "The Institute of Fundraising’s Code of Practice on Face-to-Face Activity lays the ground rules for best practice but there is a lot that fundraisers have to do that isn’t specified in the code."
The solicitation statement, or 'disclosure' as fundraisers call it, is one example. The Charities Act 2006 requires that fundraisers have to give the solicitation statement, which tells donors how much the fundraising agency is being paid by the charity, when a donor agrees to make a donation.
Nick Henry points out: "The solicitation statement sounds straightforward, but the rules governing it are quite complex and can often be misinterpreted. That’s why we have gone to some length explaining them in the new best practice section."
PFRA will enhance the best practice pages with further guidance over the coming months.
Any council official who would like a DVD containing the video should contact PFRA’s head of policy Toby Ganley at toby@pfra.org.uk, or call on 020 7401 8452.
