Autism Concern has launched an appeal to raise £150,000 by Christmas because of a funding shortfall.
The charity, formerly known as the Northamptonshire Society for Autism, has seen a major drop in grants and donations. It thinks the credit crunch and general economic downturn are among the factors to blame.
Director Sylvia Tilaks said: "This is the most desperate situation. Our reserves and income are so low that if the money isn't found, we will have to close for good at Christmas."
The appeal will include events and online activity. An eBay scheme, lottery and affiliate marketing will also come into play. Autism Concern has already achieved regional TV and newspaper publicity within Northamptonshire.

Help.co.uk offers help
Help.co.uk has set up a specific page at
www.help.co.uk/charities/202959
where supporters can make secure online donations to the charity. The company has also waived any associated administrative charges to the charity during this period.
Mohammed Nawaz, Director of Help.co.uk, commented: "I was very troubled to hear of the charity's plight and wanted to offer our assistance. We would encourage the people of Northampton, or indeed anyone who is sympathetic to the cause, to set up their own free fundraising pages on our site and help Autism Concern to hit their target."
Appeal claims value for money
Autism Concern's website makes a direct appeal for funding, but goes beyond the usual "we need funds urgently to keep going". It sensibly, given the current economic crisis, suggests that keeping it going for £150,000 is a far better deal than the £2.5 million a year it would cost for someone else (local authority?) to take over its activities.
"The cost to the tax payer of losing these services in financial terms will be around £2.5 million every year", says the charity.
