The campaign was launched to the public in May 2008, but began four years earlier when the £1.25 billion target was set. It was the largest fundraising campaign ever launched by the University and indeed by any European university. It brought it into the league of some of the major US universities that have launched multi-billion dollar campaigns and endowments. It focused on three areas that needed support: students, posts and programmes (both existing and new), and buildings and infrastructure.
The campaign's fundraising took place around the world. Around half of its total has been raised by the individual colleges.
Christine Fairchild, Director of Alumni Relations, emailed Oxford alumni today with the news. "We are all enormously grateful to the legions of alumni, friends and supporters who have contributed to the Campaign to date", she said. "On behalf of all of us here in Oxford, thank you for the role you play in furthering the goals and aspirations of this great University."
The Campaign's announcement on Twitter indicated that the Campaign would continue to fundraise:
