Sponsor a hashtag widget wins Charity Hack Weekend

Last weekend over 120 developers from across the UK met up with fundraisers at the Charity Hack Weekend with the aim of creating new software tools that will make charitable giving faster and easier.

The second annual Charity Hack Weekend, supported by PayPal and eBay, involved developers working against the clock on various projects. The winning group "Oh Charity!" developed a tool, already in beta development at ohcharity.com, which lets charities sponsor hashtags on Twitter. The team was only put together on the first morning of the weekend.

The judges were Sarah Carter, Web Technologies Manager at Comic Relief; Tom Rigby, Senior Manager, Cancer Research UK; Jamie Parkins, Product Manager, JustGiving; John Lunn, Director of Innovation, PayPal; and Nick Aldridge, CEO, MissionFish UK.

Second prize went to a Raspberry Pi–powered system that provides free WiFi internet access to customers who make a small donation to charity.

Third prize went to a virtual pub quiz for charity through telephone conferencing.

In addition, event partner JustGiving recognised a fundraising app which allows runners to communicate directly with their supporters and sponsors while completing a charity fun run.

Following the event, eBay, PayPal and its partners will provide mentoring and support for groups who wish to bring their solutions to market. 

Charity HackJohn Lunn, Head of innovation at PayPal, EMEA, said: "There was a real drive and enthusiasm to this year’s Charity Hack Weekend. e-giving is an area that most charities aren’t taking full advantage of and it was great to see them excited about its potential – excitement that we share at PayPal".

Winners of previous Charity Hack Weekends have gone on to see their ideas become working  projects. 2011 winners ‘PositiveBid’ has new micro‐donation products in development and, following involvement in the Charity Hack Weekend, it has received funding from NESTA.
