NUS to run £5m Students' Green Fund

The National Union of Students (NUS) has been awarded £5 million from HEFCE (The Higher Education Funding Council for England) to run a Students' Green Fund. This will fund local collaborative sustainability initiatives through students' unions, and is designed to ensure that sustainability remains a priority with higher education institutions.

Applications open in summer 2013

NUS will run a one-round bidding competition in this summer to allocate the funding. It will be open only to student unions, and not to other charities and voluntary organisations.

The selected projects will then receive the funding over two full academic years (2013-14 and 2014-15).

The funding will help students build on green initiatives such as Student Switch Off in university dormitories, the sustainable food programme, Student Eats, and Green Impact.

Steve Egan, Deputy Chief Executive, HEFCE said: "We are very pleased to be able to support this excellent student led initiative. It has the full support of the sector and will play an important role in helping meet challenging carbon targets and wider sustainable development goals."
