Marks & Spencer's Your Green Idea competition offers £100,000 to winner's chosen charity
Published on March 18, 2010, by howardlakein
Marks & Spencer's new 'Your Green Idea' competition is now open for entries, and offers the chance for someone to win £100,000 to spend on 'greening' an organisation of their choice, such as a school, a local community group or a charity.
'Your Green Idea' invites people to share their ideas for new, positive 'green actions' that M&S could implement under Plan A, its environmental and ethical plan.
Entries must be received by the end of 16 May 2010. M&S' panel of experts will select the best three green ideas which will be put to a public vote later in the year. The final winning idea will be implemented by M&S and rolled out across its over 700 UK stores within the next year.
M&S has launched several Plan A customer-led initiatives over the last three years. For example, the Oxfam Clothes Exchange has seen M&S' customers recycle four million garments, and carrier bag charging means that over 80% of customers now bring their own bags to M&S when shopping, saving over 600 million food bags.
£3.8m fund for voluntary sector training in integrated working for children
Published on March 18, 2010, by howardlake
The Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) has announced a £3.8 million training programme for staff and volunteers working with young people in charities, voluntary organisations and social enterprises in England. The funding is part of the new Integrated Working Initiative which CWDC is encouraging volunteers and professionals to support, by committing themselves to integrated working to help ensure the best possible support for children and young people across England.
CWDC is making available free resources and tools as part of the initiative on a new 'Integrated Working' microsite.
An estimated 70% of all work with young people is provided by third sector organisations: 35,000 charities, their staff and over 5 million volunteers make up the voluntary sector workforce working with children and young people.
A survey commissioned by CWDC has found that 77% of parents and 72% of the public think that children and young people would benefit if professionals and volunteers in all sectors, including the third sector, delivering services to children, (from scout and guide leaders to play and youth workers, care workers and teachers), worked together in a more integrated way.
Indeed, the survey found that 20% of respondents said that third sector organisations the Scouts or Guides had had the most positive impact on their childhood, ahead of religious groups (14%).
Simon Carter from the Scout Association said: "It's no surprise to us that the time spent in Scouting is cited by adults as having a positive impact on their young lives. Scouting provides young people with the opportunity to try over 200 activities. We are able to provide these adventurous activities by working with a wide range of partner organisations. For us working with others is our default position rather than an afterthought".
Deirdre Quill, Director of Integrated Workforce at CWDC, said: "The voluntary sector contributes immensely to the health, education and wellbeing of children and young people across England... We are urging all voluntary sector organisations that provide services to children and young people, their staff and volunteers, to commit to integrated working by talking to each other more, sharing information more effectively, and engaging with integrated working tools that will help them put each child at the centre of all services."
The survey was conducted by ICM which interviewed a random sample of 1,758 adults aged 18+ in England from its online panel between 29 and 31 January 2010.

Irish president to address seminar on philanthropy
Published on March 16, 2010, by paularthertonIrish President, Mary McAleese, will be the keynote speaker at a seminar in Dublin on 14th April, "Realising the Power and Potential of Women’s Philanthropy".
The seminar is a collaboration between the Community Foundation for Ireland and Philanthropy Ireland and is being supported by Ulster Bank. The seminar will also be addressed by Ellen Remmer, an American expert on philanthropy.
In May 2009, TPI hosted a delegation consisting of fourteen senior administrators and policymakers from philanthropic foundations, relevant government agencies, and grant making bodies in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The intent of the program was to highlight examples of innovation, thoughtful leadership, and administrative best practice in the world of philanthropy – with an emphasis on exploring lessons learned from the evolution of American philanthropy over the past several decades.
This delegation chose Ellen Remmer to bring to Ireland in the spring of 2010 to teach and inspire emerging philanthropy leaders. In addition to "Realising the Power and Potential of Women’s Philanthrop", Remmer will host a seminar on family philanthropy for professional advisors.
The Philanthropic Initiative, Inc. (TPI) is a Boston-based nonprofit advisory team that designs, carries out and evaluates philanthropic programmes for individual donors, families, foundations, and corporations.
Bmycharity to merge with Help for Heroes
Published on March 16, 2010, by howardlakeOnline fundraising service Bmycharity, which last week announced it was to close, has today announced that it will continue by merging with services charity Help for Heroes. In a blog post, founder Ben Brabyn said that the new service would be rebranded and renamed Bmyhero.
He assured those charities using the service that "Bmycharity and H4H [Help for Heroes] will honour the terms of existing Bmycharity contracts" and that both parties were committed to Bmycharity's focus on commission-free online fundraising.
Bmycharity originally announced that it was to close following its failure to secure investment to help it expand further.
Brabyn, a former Royal Marine, told UK Fundraising that the partnership with the services charity was "a very elegant solution". Help for Heroes' technology resources, its public reputation, and its "fantastic corporate supporter relationships" meant that the combination would help the service expand and help charities even more.
In practice, Bmyhero will be owned by Help for Heroes Trading Co Ltd, the wholly owned trading subsidiary of Help for Heroes, the charity. The profits from Help for Heroes Trading are used to cover all the administrative costs of both the charity and the trading company. Brabyn added: "H4H's trading company and technology partners will invest in developing the service to remain at the cutting edge of online fundraising innovation".
Help for Heroes Chief Executive Bryn Parry said: "At H4H, we do everything we can to ensure that every penny we receive goes to the cause and so we want to be sure that Bmycharity can continue to offer their free service to the charity sector".
