Lady Heald dies

Lady Heald CBE, volunteer fundraiser for cancer charities and chairman of the National Gardens Scheme, has died aged 99.


Daphne Heald was a founding member of the fundraising committee of Marie Curie Cancer Care, and was actively involved in supporting a range of other charities.

Essex Air Ambulance's success in online event registration

Essex Air Ambulance's fundraising team have reported a successful response to their online registration form for the annual Motorcycle Run in September.

According to Rotorhub.com, "over 100 bikers have already booked their places using the online registration" form, and the charity expects this number to increase before the event is held on 12 September 2004.

10-year fundraising campaign pays off for hospital play area

It has taken 10 years to raise the £40,000 needed for a play area at the Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, Kent, but the facility has now been opened.

Sponsored cycle rides by corporate supporters in four countries and a donation from the hospital's league of friends combined to reach the total.

A Stoke-on-Trent hospice has severed its links with TV presenter Anthea Turner because, it claims, she failed to turn up at two charity events.

Win dinner with Gazza on eBay for charity

Dinner with former England football player Paul Gascoigne is on offer on eBay in aid of the Hartlepool and District Hospice.

The football player is using eBay to support a local charity.

The hospice has benefited from support from other footballers including Newcastle United star Alan Shearer. In April 2004 an event at which he was guest speaker raised £65,000.

Consumer brand consultancy Kazoo Communications has been appointed by international aid and development agency World Vision to handle all public relations for their annual youth fundraising event, the 24-hour Famine.

Accidents do happen at fundraising events, as Guide Dogs for the Blind Association discovered this month.

Ic Southlondon reports that a seven-year-old boy had to have surgery to his eye after he tripped and fell in his school playground wearing sunglasses as part of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association's (GDBA) Shades for a Day campaign.

Research by online sponsorship company Bmycharity reveals that each year fundraising events could raise £140 million more in Gift Aid while saving £55 million in banking and administration costs simply by using online sponsorship tools.

New £5 coin produced

The Royal Mint has created a new £5 coin that is legal tender so can be accepted as a donation.

The £5 crown has been issued to commemorate the centenary of the Entente Cordiale, the agreement between Britain and France. The two symbolic figures of Britannia and Marianne appear on the reverse, merged at the waist as if on a court playing card.
