Just how big is fundraising in the UK? How many fundraisers are there?

The Institute of Charity Fundraising Managers' Annual Report 1996-7 lists some impressive figures that show the dimensions of fundraising in the UK.

  • The charity sector has an annual income of between £12 and £16 billion.

Ideas from the grassroots

$$ Grassroots Fundraising $$ offers an online collection of ideas, hints and tips that are intended to help local community-based fundraisers.

Its Australian authors don't claim the list is comprehensive, but they hope the information will act as a guide or spark that "will fire you and your organisation down the path to successful and enjoyable fundraising".

Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Fund

Last month's outpouring of giving following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, was astonishing.

Donations to the nascent Memorial Fund have exceeded in one week the total amount that the largest and most successful UK fundraising charity could raise in a whole year. CAF have published a page of information about the Fund and the charities that Diana supported.

One of Smee and Ford's more amusing stories of strange-but-true charitable bequests hit the newspapers recently.

Charity Commission launches Web site

The Charity Commission launched their Web site on 29 October 1997.

Visitors to the site can now search for information on any of the 180,000 or so registered charities in England and Wales.

Tools of the trade

Online magazine Non-Profit Nuts and Bolts Online aims to provide non-profit executives and staff specialists with practical tips to build a better organisation.

Styled "the information source for busy, budget-stretching, lean-staffed non-profit executives", it is an online version of the paper-based magazine. A free sample edition of this is available to nonprofits.

Star guide for donors

GuideStar is a free service that aims to be "the donor's guide to the nonprofit universe."

Fundraising in Southern Africa

UK Fundraising is pleased to welcome another national fundraising organisation to the Web.

The Southern Africa Institute of Fundraising publishes information on its Code of Ethics, National Council, branches, membership details and constitution.

Note that a fundraising consultancy generously sponsored the creation of their Web site.
