SVP tops the legacy table

St Vincent de Paul raised over ‚€5 million in 2003 from legacies and topped the legacy table in Ireland, according to a survey from the Public Communications Institute.

SVP also accounted for over 40% of total legacy income received by the sample of 28 Irish charities. The sample included charities representing health and children, international aid and human rights, community and anti-poverty, rights based and cultural organisations.

Other major charities in the survey included Concern, Trocaire, Goal, Simon Community, Irish Red Cross and Irish Heart Foundation.

The PCI survey showed that total income for the sample grew from just under ‚€5 million to over ‚€11 million from 1998 to 2003. Overall, legacy income continues to account for less than 10% of voluntary income for most organisations.

Meanwhile, information published last week by the Probate Office showed that a Meath farmer left ‚€16 million in her will and prominent property developer Phil Monahan left nearly ‚€27 million.
