Charity to scoop ‚€10 million

Submitted by paulartherton on 23 June, 2005 - 00:00.

A Galway publican's generosity is set to provide a windfall estimated at ‚€10 million for the local branch of St Vincent de Paul. The charity was left a pub by Maureen O'Connell, a spinster who died in 1998.

The Galway city centre pub left in the will will be sold later this year. Legal issues delayed the sale until this year.

Ms O'Connell had been in a nursing home before her death and had no close relatives. The property includes apartments as well as the pub.

St Vincent de Paul had no comment to make on the bequest. SVP is one of the biggest recipients of charitable bequests in Ireland.
