How do I start?

Submitted by ginanegus on 25 May, 2003 - 22:50.

I have a three year old grandson diagnosed with autism.
He is supposed to get speech therapy, occupational therapy, dieticians help with feeding etc.
In fact he just attends a childrens centre twice a week, never sees any of the therapists that he is entitled to by law, even though it says on his care plan that he does.
He is not alone, the other children at the centre are in the same boat. Lack of funding is the general excuse.
Early intervention is critical with autistic children, but they are just left in a closed world by an uncaring society.
I want to raise money to set up a fund to pay for therapy for my grandson and other kids like him,but I have no idea of what I need to do to begin.
Any advice please?

Hi I am an autism

Hi
I am an autism specialist, qualified primary teacher and also work in ABA interventions for children with Autism. Through this work I have come across a number of families like yourselves who have to pay for their own treatments...where are you based? and has your grandson been given a school/ nursery placement yet?

Hi, nanofdan

You are likely to be more effective if you work with others in this field. I would start with the Charity Commission website and search for the nearest Autism group to you. You could check out the local and national bodies to see which suits your needs best.

There is under-provision of services for autistic children, but there are several local groups, some quite substantial, who could help you, and who would in turn be grateful for your energy and enthusiasm for fundraising.

With the resources of a group behind you, you will have greater credibility, and access to teh kind of support you request from this group.

A word of caution : many groups will regard you with caution at first, until you have demonstrated that you really do have the interests of children with autism at heart, and you will have to consider the needs of all of them, rather than just your grandson. Having said that, the benefit to your grandson of having a strong local group will outweigh the dilution of his cause, and you will probably raise more money too.

Good luck, to you, to him, and to the whole family.
