hello, list members
If you spotted an earlier posting from me, you will know that I'm working
on a rewrite of the Open University's fund-raising course. I've got a
couple of queries I wonder if anyone might be able to help me with.
I'm wondering how common is the use of 'Case Statements' - either in terms
of the terminology or the approach itself - in UK fundraising. It's been
evident in a lot of the US material I've looked at but not sure how far
it's adopted in the UK - my assumption is that's it's likely to be a
practice in larger rather than smaller organisations but happy to be told
otherwise.
On evaluation I'd be interested in hearing from people about the
approaches they take to assessing whether a particular event/ campaign etc
was 'successful' or not as I'm keen to include some 'real life' case study
examples of how real fundraisers go about doing things.
As before, please reply direct to my email address below if that seems
more appropriate.
regards
Jane

The tragedy here is fairly widespread. Cases for Support are indigenous to
the profession, whether in large or small charities (size for once not
making a difference), and it is therefore depressing in the extreme both
that the researcher had to ask the question and that someone else had to ask
what one was.
This only really points up the huge disparities of expertise within the
profession as a whole and the subsequent bad practice in both small and
large charities. One can only hope that this confusion is a matter of
varied vocabulary rather than, as I fear, many charities making no case at
all.

I don't understand the term 'case statement' at all, I have to confess. To
me it seems to be a mixture of 'case for support' (which is surely the basis
of any application to anybody whether done by a ICFM'd professional or a
committed amateur) and a case study which might form a part of that case for
support.
So in terms of the terminology, it's not a phrase I would use, although I
would obviously use both case studies and cases for support.
Clear as mud?

Re Amanda Brings' surprise about the OU asking about case statements, the
question asked was about the extent to which it is used in the UK, bearing in
mind that the great majority of UK fundraisers are not IoF members and only a
few of those who are have taken the certificate course.

Amanda - thanks for the speedy response! Yes, I am aware of the IF use of
the concept - this course is a partnership with IF so I've been working
closely with them on this. Perhaps my message wasn't clear enough but I'm
really after knowing how much the terminology is part of common parlance
amongst all fundraisers and the response I'm getting is that we shouldn't
be assuming that it is - so it needs explanation for people. Amongst c30
fundraisers I've spoken with so far through this and other routes around
2/3rds just don't use the term in their organisations - so I'm keen to
have examples that will make the concept/ approach familiar to people.

I'm not sure what you mean by "case statements" ... is that the same as case
studies, ie examples taken from front line work?

Jane,
I am a bit worried that as the tutor on a crucial fundraising course you
are not aware that the case for support or case statement is a key part of
the Institute of Fundraising's most excellent Fundraising Foundation
course, and as such is the cornerstone of the majority of fundraising
strategies in the UK.
