To all on FundUK
I'm delighted to announce that I'm introducing a much-improved version of
the FundUK e-mail list. From Tuesday 25th March, all messages will be
published on a Web bulletin board as well as via e-mail. In this way, all
messages sent to the list will be archived and will be searchable.
FundUK will become the core of the UK Fundraising Forum, a new facility
that can host any number of fundraising discussion forums, run by us or
other organisations or groups. As a result, for the first time, FundUK will
become part of the UK Fundraising Web site (www.fundraising.co.uk).
So, what will this mean to you? The new system will allow you to:
* subscribe to particular topics of interest e.g. direct marketing, events
fundraising, or you can subscribe to every message, pretty much as you do now.
* search the archive of messages already posted.
* keep up to date solely via the Web site, if you wish. You can click on
the link on the main page to "today's active discussions" to do that. You
don't have to subscribe to the e-mail version if you don't want to.
* control which of your contact details are made public. You can, for
example, hide your e-mail address, but still allow yourself, if you wish,
to be contacted by other forum members via the system's private message
facility, without revealing your e-mail address to the person contacting you.
* view the members' list, or at least the details that the forum members
have chosen to make public
* you will post messages by entering the text into a Web page form rather
than sending them to the FundUK e-mail address
* you can even edit a message once you have posted it.
* in time, you'll be able to search the archive of all past messages to
FundUK (1996-2003), although adding this archive could take a while
I won't go into all the other new facilities now, but I hope you'll find
the new system offers you much more than the current FundUK. It should
allow you to choose to follow the topics that matter to you, rather than
have to wade through every message posted. It will also make managing the
list easier. There's a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page that should
answer most of your questions.
Of course, Fundraising UK Ltd will continue to provide FundUK and the Forum
at no charge.
So, what should you do now? Do explore the new Forum at
and register.
Once registered, you can even post a message if you want. If you'd like to
test the system, I've created a separate test forum so that you can see
what your message will look like. If you do register, don't forget to
unsubscribe from this version of FundUK by sending the message
unsubscribe funduk
to
funduk-request@lists.dircon.co.uk
There will be no more messages on the e-mail version of FundUK, apart from
my admin reminders and possibly any paid-for adverts that come in in the
next few days. From now on, if anyone posts a message to the current e-mail
version of FundUK, I'll simply request that they post it on the Forum. I'll
continue to monitor the e-mail addresses of FundUK, but as of Tuesday
morning, I'll declare the new Web-based FundUK open.
I'll continue sending reminders of this changeover to this e-mail list for
some time, so don't worry that you might get left out of the loop.
I very much hope you like the new system. It will take a while to get used
to, but I'm sure you'll find the new facilities make that worthwhile.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Netscalibur (formerly Direct
Connection) for sponsoring FundUK for these past seven years. Without their
generous technical support and hosting, this forum would not have been
possible.
Any questions about the change? If the FAQ doesn't answer them, drop me an
e-mail at hlake@fundraising.co.uk.

ADMIN > FundUK archives being added

From: Howard Lake - FundUK list manager
To all still on the discontinued FundUK list
You might be pleased to know that we've added just under 10% of the
1996-2003 archives of FundUK to the new Web and e-mail version of the
discussion forum at
www.fundraising.co.uk/forum
They are all being added into the Archives sub-category. While we've only
managed to add messages from July 1996-October 1997, you might still find
them useful. Some of the questions and issues still crop up today e.g.
* what are the rules and regs on collecting tins?
* donor recognition
* how good are the CDs of grant-making trusts?
* VAT on fundraising?
* legacy campaign materials
* which charities have benefited from Radio 4's Week's Good Cause?
So feel free to explore the new forum. Of course, new messages are now
being posted pretty much every day in the other sub-categories.
Incidentally, the new Web-based forum has enabled these archived messages
to be presented in a novel way. Using the Web site, you can now follow
individual topics or "threads" as they progressed. The original e-mail list
simply arrived one message at a time in chronological order - there was no
"threading" of related discussions.
We'll keep on adding the archives bit by bit.
Meanwhile, I recommend that you unsubscribe from this e-mail list as all
the discussion is now happening on the Web-based forum at
www.fundraising.co.uk/forum
To unsubscribe send the message
unsubscribe funduk
to
funduk-request@lists.dircon.co.uk
I'll probably stop sending these reminders in a week or so. After that,
this e-mail list will be no more.
Thank you.

ADMIN > Switching over to new Web and e-mail bulletin board
Date: Wed, 02 Apr 2003 11:37:49 -0000
From: Howard Lake - FundUK list manager
To all on FundUK
Thank you to everyone who has now registered on the new Web and e-mail
version of FundUK that has replaced this list:
www.fundraising.co.uk/forum
Many of you have also explored the new site without registering, so thank
you also for taking the time to do this.
As promised, I said I'd use the original FundUK e-mail list a few more
times to help subscribers manage the move to the new system. So, here are
some answers to some of the questions you've asked.
1. Will the original FundUK e-mail list continue?
No. FundUK has now moved to a Web and e-mail system on the UK Fundraising
Web site at
www.fundraising.co.uk/forum
As list manager, I'll send a few more reminders via this old list to help
everyone move to the new forum.
2. Do I need to stay subscribed to this list?
No. I suggest you visit the new forum and explore the new messages that are
being posted there and register to receive e-mail updates, if you wish. You
can now unsubscribe from this list by sending the message
unsubscribe funduk
to
funduk-request@lists.dircon.co.uk
After another week or two, I'll close this e-mail list down and stop
sending these reminders.
3. Why doesn't my message appear immediately on the forum?
I am still acting as moderator on the forum, so there will always be a time
lag between messages being posted and actually appearing. This helps
preserve the focus of the forum and ensure that inappropriate messages do
not appear. I'll try to approve messages as soon as possible, but
occasionally there can be a delay of a day or so.
4. How do I stay in touch with new messages on the forum?
There are three ways to do this:
* on the forum Web site's home page, click on "view new posts" in the top
right-hand corner
* to get e-mail notifications for a particular sub-category click on
"subscribe to this Forum" in the top right-hand corner.
* I'm currently listing all new topics as part of our free fortnightly
e-mail newsletter, UK Fundraising News. You can subscribe at no charge at
www.fundraising.co.uk/news/signup.html
5. Can I receive e-mail notification of every message on every forum?
You can, but you'll need to subscribe to each Forum sub-category in turn.
Time-consuming I agree, but I foresee FundUK expanding quite a bit and
think that fairly soon, no-one would really want to receive notification of
every single new message posted on the forum.
The "view new posts" link mentioned above should help those who are
concerned that they'll miss out on the serendipitous nature of receiving
all FundUK messages. So, subscribe to the forum(s) that interest you - that
will generate e-mail notifications of new messages, and when you're on the
forum have a look for all new posts.
6. Why aren't there categories for other types of fundraising?
I dislike duplication, particularly in terms of online resources, so have
held back for the moment from creating categories for discussion which are
covered by other e-mail lists/forums e.g. the Trust fundraising group and
the e-fundraising group. Some of them might choose to move their forums to
the UK Fundraising Forum system: indeed, I've offered this service at no
charge.
That said, if I get a number of posts on particular topics, then I might
well just create some of these categories. After all, FundUK was always
designed to cater for discussion of all areas of fundraising in the UK, and
has co-existed well with the more focused lists that have sprung up in its
wake.
So, if you have a message, just post it to the forum. I can always move
messages to a more appropriate sub-category in the future.
7. When can I view the archives?
The 4,000 messages posted to FundUK since 1996 aren't yet available on the
Forum. It's a shame, but they will need to be re-entered manually, which
will take time and some expense. I'll get round to that fairly soon, but
it's not yet a priority. Still, when they are available I'm sure you'll
appreciate what a tremendous resource FundUK's members have created for the
fundraising profession.
Thanks for bearing with the changeover to the new system.

ADMIN > Moving to Web-based version of FundUK
Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2003 11:03:24 +0000
From: Howard Lake - FundUK list manager
To all on FundUK
The new Web and e-mail version of FundUK was launched yesterday at
www.fundraising.co.uk/forum
In the first day we've had 70 people register to post messages and/or
receive e-mail updates on the forum. We've also had a few messages posted,
covering organising a 100 Club, booklet fundraising, calls for funding, and
discussion of whether to keep FundUK as a single forum or split it into
separate categories. A job advertisement for a Fundraising Director has
also been posted. (We've kept the latter facility at its original fee of 99
pounds + VAT).
If you are one of those 70, then you're welcome to unsubscribe from this
e-mail version of FundUK. The only messages that will come via this system
will be from me encouraging people to switch over to the new system.
To unsubscribe from this e-mail list, send the message
subscribe funduk
to
funduk-request@lists.dircon.co.uk
No doubt many of you will have explored the new Web-based system and
noticed that you don't have to register to view messages. That's part of
the service. Until you register, however, you won't be able to post a
message or receive e-mail notifications of new messages.

ADMIN > New Web-based version of FundUK now live
Date: Tue, 25 Mar 2003 10:14:24 +0000
From: Howard Lake, FundUK list manager
To all on FundUK
The new Web and e-mail version of FundUK is now live and available at
www.fundraising.co.uk/forum
All messages to FundUK should from now on be posted at the Forum. They will
then be e-mailed out to everyone who has subscribed to that topic or
discussion. To post a message you will need to register at the Forum - this
requirement helps to ensure that we don't get irrelevant or offensive postings.
You or indeed anyone can view the messages in FundUK without having to
register, but I'd recommend registering now, just to get it over with.
No further normal FundUK messages will be sent via this e-mail list: all
the action will be taking place via the Web-based version. I'll continue to
send reminders via this list to make sure everyone is happy moving across
to the new system. I'll also post via this list any paid-for adverts that
might be booked in the transition phase.
It's a shame that I haven't managed to load all the past archived messages
going back to 1996, so the current forum looks a little sparse. It's now
over to you to use it!
I'll send another message shortly with some answers to some of the more
common questions or reactions to the new forum that I have received.
