Hi all
I have been given the task of trying to draw up a legacy leaflet. I am currently trying to decide between putting the wording for a bequest in the leaflet or asking people to contact us if they want the wording so that we then have some idea of who might be leaving a legacy to us. What does everyone think?

Re: Legacy leaflet
What has worked well for me, and is fairly common practice is to split the legacy stuff into two stages
a general leaflet which will put your case, why leave money to xyz, and what it will achieve. Keep this leaflet as free of technalities as possible but use that leaflet to get potential donors to request a how to leave your millions to xyz pack. That way you have captured the data
The pack should contain all the technical stuff that the donor and their legal team need

Re: Legacy leaflet
I'd have thought it best to include the recommended wording in the leaflet. Anything that a) makes it easier for the potential legator to complete the task and b) helps reduce the likelihood of contested wills would make sense.
Nice idea to think of getting the potential legator to contact you, but I think it could put some people off. You might also get more enquiries from solicitors acting for their clients than individuals - not necessary a bad thing, but maybe not what you were hoping for.
Also, I'd imagine you'd be more interested in those that have actually included your charity in their will, and you can try to find that out with a tear-off response card as part of the leaflet, and by requesting such notifications in your newsletter(s).
