I have to monitor estate progress where we have been left a legacy. Most solicitors are efficient, reasonably trimely, and happy to keep charities advised of progress where delays occur. However I am experiencing problems with two different firms. In both cases we are residuary legatees and property sales are involved. Sales are being delayed and solicitors will not respond to any requests for information, updated valuations etc either by correspondence or telephone- the solicitor is invariably "with a client".
I am reluctant to complain to Law Society (although tempted!). Does anyone else come across the same problem? Any ideas?

Re: Inefficient solicitors
Not at least getting their secretaries to return your call with an update is just plain rude IMO.
In your position, I would find out the name of the managing partner/s and direct a letter of complaint that your calls/requests for information are not obtaining a response. Unfortunately, solicitors are not obliged to respond to anyone except clients, former clients and the Law Society. It may be that they have been instructed not to respond to enquiries on the legacy and are only following instructions - but if this is the case, then they should at least let you know so you're not wasting time.
