Hello,
how do I verify whether or not a foreign charity is legitimate.
I'd like to support the cause of New Shrine Foundation (http://www.newshrinefoundation.org ) but can't find it on any charity review lists.
Please help,
Kind Regards,
Jon.

RE: Verifying foreign charities
I'm afraid that's a little beyond the scope of this forum for fundraisers.
A quick search on Google shows that the foundation, based in Nepal, is "registered with His Majesty's Governmental of Nepal. The New Shrine Academy is affiliated with the Department of Education."

Not surprisingly, I'm not aware of Nepalese charity/nonprofit registration requirements and whether the above confirms its legitimacy.
According to a discussion on the Philanthropy News Digest forum at:

"New Shrine Charity is in the process of registering in the Canada. Very soon we will have volunteer coordinator in the USA too."
Registration or affiliation in those countries should allow for easier access to its financial and other records.
