Setting up foundation

Submitted by Forum_Admin on 22 November, 2006 - 11:15.

Dear All,

I am currently working for a development ngo in south India. I'm a program manager for a community outreach program, that deals with medical and education needs for marginalised rural communities in tamil nadu. The ngo accepts volunteers, which is where most of our funds curently come from. Many volunteers donate money, and i think due to our size we offer a very good service to people wishing to donate, as our overheads are quite low and people can see good use of there money.
Unfortunately i have to leave india shortly and will be back in the uk. Not wishing to break ties with the ngo completely, im thinking about registering the ngo as a foundation in the uk, with the intention of raising money in uk to send to the ngo. As im still in india i havent had much chance to research this properly yet.. Anybody got any good suggestions, links and advice about undertaking this.. I am still very much in the planning stage, the main things i need to know are - how much of your time does this take? , is it expensive to set up? (i have limited funds)

Any replies greatly received

John.

RE: Setting up foundation

The Charity Commission website has all of the information you need to start a charity. It can't be hard because nearly 200,000 have been formed.

But have a think -- don't you have any links with an existing UK charity? Your time may be better spent finding a UK partner among the hundreds of charities interested in India and health.

Then you could fundraise for your project via the existing charity.
