I'm a regional officer for a UK based charity that recruits, trains, places and supports lay christian volunteers within projects in East Africa not too convert people but to share their professional & technical skills for two years training people to replace them.
I am trying to find funding for a number of volunteers to the tune of around £250,000 but everyone I contact including the likes of Comic Relief, Dfid etc.. all say they will only fund the projects and not the people. We are only a sending agency who work with the likes of CAFOD and Christian Aid who have already set up the projects and just need the skilled volunteers.
Does anyone have any ideas of a way around this or specific funding bodies for individuals?

RE: Major fundraising for volunteers
Thanks Martin,
We do insist that our volunteers raise as much as possible towards their time away and many are supported by their local churches, sponsorship, friends/family etc.. We also as an organisation have home based activity over the year to raise a certain amount ourselves. the £250,000 is the gap that we need to fill in our projected growth over the next two years.
We have tried approaching the big fund givers with the idea of them essentially funding the volunteer through the project but again most are reluctant to do so and will only fund local people in the role.
RE: Major fundraising for volunteers
Can the people be made part of the expense of the project?
Or perhaps (such as a number of missionary societies do) the volunteers themselves raise their own support?
