Does anyone have any experience that they would like to share regarding higher level asks in a direct mail campaign?
We are considering testing a cold mailing to a targetted list of potentially high value givers. It would be an ask for a one-off gift of over £500.
Additionally, can anyone recommend a freelance copywriter/designer who has experience in cold acquisition for development charities? If they have experience of developing higher value asks, that would be even better.
Thanks

RE: Higher Level Ask Direct Mail
I have seen one campaign that asked for higher giving amounts. It was created as a vdp campaign (variable data and image using 4 colour process), so therefore very highly targeted. If your databse provides enough information about the prospective donor, eg. job title, previous dontations, affiliate membershps, interest, hobbies etc., then this may be a format worth exploring.
The cost per item is higher, however the high level of personalisation does increase response rates.
RE: Higher Level Ask Direct Mail
I'm not sure if you are asking about a letter asking for a single amount or about the range of suggested amounts in a response mechanism.
We have varied the ask according to database segments in WARM Mailings - with good results. The basic rules of thumb -at least for `suggested amounts` are to start with the highest number first, (people read left to right and stop when they feel comfortable) and place the amount you are asking for towards the middle of the line. That amount should be say 25% larger than their previous gift and can be increased incrementally over time.
We have certainly used a line of numbers where the target figure is £500 or even £1000. But do follow the rules, if the most they have given is £100 the step up would, in my opinion at least, be too great.
For a cold mailing I have no direct experience, our approach has always been more subtle with major donors! Anyway Hope you do well!
