Help

Submitted by Forum_Admin on 3 October, 2007 - 14:36.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. We, as a registered charity, have just gone through a rebranding exercise and a new logo has been approved by our Board of Trustees. Do we have to get this logo approved by the Charity Commission before we can use it, does anyone know? I know I will have to register it for copyright and trademarks etc.

Many, many thanks in anticipation.

RE: Help

You may need to tell the Charity Commission if you are using a different name in public. Why not call their help line which is answered by friendly people.

Martin is right - logos, acronyms and related web addresses (URLs) all need some research before any changes are made.

The Fundraising Standards Board (FSB) became the FundRaising Standards Board (FRSB) earlier this year following discussions with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

UK Fundraising covered it at:

RE: Help

Hmmm....didn't the Fundraising standards board (FSB) have some problem with their logo or initials being close to some other organisation? Then had to change it?
Thats about the only problem I can think of - though can be expensive to change letterheads, posters, logos all over the place.

RE: Help

Thanks for your help Howard. Much appreciated.

On the issue of copyright, you don't have to register something as copyright - it is a right acquired automatically (by the Berne Convention of 1886) provided the work meets certain basic criteria e.g. it is novel, involves 'sweat of the brow' effort etc.

You might be thinking of the USA, where the Copyright Office accepts registrations of US works.

I've not come across any requirement for the Charity Commission to approve a charity's logo, and can't find any reference to that on its website. Given their increasing responsibilities and decreasing budget I reckon that's one area of activity they're glad they don't have to handle.
