I am hoping that maybe someone can share her/his wisdom with me. I am currently doing an internship in Hambug, Germany for a small consulting firm / think tank. I am currently researching for a knowledge project concerned with NGOs. We have no budget for this project - not for salaries or expenses. I was recently assigned the role of fundraiser but have come to find the my initial concerns were not unfounded - fundraising is undoubtedly a professional job.
Our project is intended to provide NGOs with a better understanding of how they function and can develop. However, I'm not sure which funders/sponsors I should be targeting. I recognise the following 2 complications with trying to fund such a study:
1. I'm trying to secure funding from outside of Germany (though the participating NGOs will also be based in the UK)
2. We are in fact a consulting firm rather than an NGO (though only a small team of freelancers with no budget for the project)
Am I right to be feeling pessimistic (though I'm still optimistc!)? Is it possible, or rather, is it reasonable to expect to obtain funding for such a project?
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

RE: Fundraising for consultancy knowledge project
Perhaps I'm being a bit slow on the uptake here or have missed something, but if NGOs have been identified to participate in the process and have agreed that this consultancy would be of value to them, is there any room for asking them to contribute towards consultancy costs?
RE: Fundraising for consultancy knowledge project
Thanks for the advice Gerry and Martyn, I will look in to the suggestions you put forward. We think we might have found a couple of foundations/groups who might have an interest in funding such a project...we shall see what happens. Thanks again...Nathan
RE: Fundraising for consultancy knowledge project
Just to agree with Gerry that it will not be easy for non-academic body.
Also the issue of consultancy body touting around would generally produce a negative response, unless you already had a working relationship.
I have had some experience on getting studies funded via the EU but a) this was easier a few years ago b) the approach was always from a non-commercial organisation, in my case a local authority c) it took months to organise.
There is scope amongst mainstream EU programmes i.e. INTERREG and the Framework programmes but the "knowledge transfer" would clearly have to relate to the objectives of the respective programme i.e. quality of life. Alternatively "piggyback" your project on to a larger pilot project or activity going for aforementioned EU programmes?
RE: Fundraising for consultancy knowledge project
I think you're probably correct in thinking it would be, at least, challenging to secure such funding. There may be some mileage in pitching the idea to people like ACEVO (if Stephen's reading this, "Sorry!") or the Office of the Third Sector - maybe NCVO too.
I'm not clear, from what you've said so far, what exactly you're trying to do or why an external funder might want to support the project. You'd need to be clear on that first.
Cheers
Gerry
