Hi
A colleague and myself are wanting to start a not for profit or charitable organisation as we have identified a gap in services/ assistance for vulnerable women in our community lacking basic needs such as shelter, food, healthcare, education.
We want to initially provide an outreach service to get them assistance from other agnecies and then hopefully a house in multiple occupation with short term tenancies where we can operate a soup kitchen, give food parcels,, provide clinics for other agenices etc and build lifeskills which will enable them to maintain a tenancy.
I know this sounds like a massive venture and it probably is, but how do we start?
We dont know whether to form as a not for profit organisation of charity or where the best sources of funding are for such a service.
Any advice will be gratefully received
thanks

RE: Just starting Out
^^^ I would just like to say that the above post wasn't me, even though he stole my normal line.
In addition to Martin R's advice (which I evidently agree with wholeheartedly), a question? - Susan, do you and your colleague have any experience with working with these women - or personal experience yourselves? This isn't clear from your original post.
No offence meant, but some personal experience with this type of project (although at a 'removed' level as a funder) has clearly demonstrated that contacts and networks in the group you are looking to serve are critical to success. Otherwise, the women you are talking about simply won't come in. If they are so disenfranchised that they can't access statutory services through the normal sources, then what would make them come to your centre? Posters won't cut it.
Yours and your colleague's desire to help may well bear more fruit through working with/partnering with an existing organisation working with the kinds of women you are looking to help - perhaps assisting them to expand their activities, or if this isn't appropriate, at least getting some mutual support and connected project work going.
RE: Just starting Out
I would speak to your local Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) initially, apart from the advice and support services they offer, they may have a better idea of who does what locally and I think you may need to ask yourself whether a new group is required or would your energies be better channelled through an existing body?
