Hello,
We are a small charity based in Birmingham. First and foremost, our charity is about raising awareness of Leukaemia and other cancers in children, teenagers and young adults.
Additionally, we are raising funds for 2 projects:-
- We are raising funds for the building of a new specialist Teenage Cancer Unit at Birmingham Childrens Hospital.
- We are also in discussions with a leading Paediatric Oncologist who is setting up a research project into the causes of Leukaemia in teenagers and young adults.
We have held a number of small events however we have now decided to do something on a larger scale and I am asking for some advice. We have arranged a Parachute Jump with the RAF for 100 people but to coincide with this, we also want to put on a family fun day for family and friends.
We need:-
1) Volunteers to do the Jump and raise money through sponsorship. We have approx 30 of our 100 target - does anyone have any ideas about how to get the other 70 apart from local newspaper and radio advertising?
2) I've searched the internet looking for a company to take on the Fun Day side but they are all very expensive. Does anyone know of any companies who would do this for charities at a reduced rate?
Your thoughts and advice would be very welcome.
Thanks.....Diane

RE: Parachute Jump & Family Fun Day
Hi Gerry,
Thanks for the reply.
The reason I have started to look at a company organising the fun day is because of the amount of Health & Safety/Organisational issues and also the number of people I would need to help co-ordinate the day. As I work full-time, it doesnt leave a lot of time to co-ordinate an event of this nature. As we are hoping to have 100 "mad" parachutists, the idea of the Fun Day is so that family and friends can also come along to support without being bored all day. Just thought it would make things a bit easier if we got a company to take ownership of the Fun Day but as I said, they are working out very expensive. We have looked into staging the Fun Day ourselves and will keep looking at this side too.
As I said, we are only a small charity and this is our first attempt at a major event having undertaken a few smaller events in the past and I really wouldnt want anything to go wrong!!
Thanks
Diane
RE: Parachute Jump & Family Fun Day
Hi, Diane
What do you mean by a Fun Day, and why are you looking for a company to organise it?
Event Management Companies can certainly put on a good show for you, but they won't be able to generate customers - typically, they'll expect you to produce the crowds, and they will then manage and entertain them.
Have you contacted groups like Lions, Round Table, Rotaract or some of the Student groups around Birmingham? I would look to one or more of these, both to recruit the type of idiot who leaps out of a plane with a film of silk to keep them from a very sharp landing, and to run the fun day side of the event.
Feel free to contact me off list if you want to talk this through a bit more, but that would be my approach. It will have the side benefit of raising awareness of your charity with a group or groups who could be very helpful in the longer run.
Cheers
Gerry
