First time

Submitted by patriciarichards on 1 November, 2007 - 01:21.

Hi im a student with not enough time to try and set up a charity yet. I would really like to go out and collect for charities but im not sure on the law.

If i just got a collection box and asked for donations and give the cash to the charity i decided on would this be illegal or could i say that its not a registered charity and that makes it legal.

Also i would never do this! but i have always thought do the charities by law have to give all the money they make to the cause or can they decide how much they feel is ok.

Sorry if theses are stupid questions but it is nearly 3am and my brain is not working fully lol

RE: First time

There's what you CAN do, and there's what you SHOULD do!

Sandre's told you what you should do - and the Student Union might be a very good way to start. I learned a huge amount about the world of charities from three years on a Rag Committee (thought : does that have anything to do with the number of exams I failed???)

You certainly CAN collect in a loose-cannon kind of a way, but it's not recommended, and you may find yourself having to justify yourself to an Officer of the Law. Much better to go through an established channel.

Cheers

Gerry

RE: First time

In addition to Sandre's comments, I'd say to contact your Student Association or Student Union, who likely have a RAG or charities campaign doing just what you're looking at doing. If they don't, search for UKRag on the web where you will find like-minded insomniacs.

RE: First time

Howard, Forum God, will tell you that this forum is aimed at professional fundraisers rather than individuals collecting on behalf of a charity.

If you want to learn about charity law in relation to starting your own - legal, accounting, fundraising, etc, your first port of call should be the Charity Commission website at http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk Much of what is on there will certainly cure your apparent insomnia  - but it is the best starting point.

To answer your question about collecting - contact the charity you are wanting to collect for, they will be delighted to have your support and will be able to tell you the basics that you need to know.
