NPO In Planning Stages

I am currently in the process of trying to get an idea off the ground which I care passionately about. It would qualify as a great business idea, but i want it to be exclusively non-profit.

It is not in any way a traditional charity, but I believe its benefits to people could be immense even on an international scale.

The primary theme involves (without giving too much away) developing a selection of web tools and software that would allow individuals around the world to develop ideas which are beneficial to people, with the online help of other experienced and motivated people around the world.

As this is not a traditional charitable idea per se, I am completely clueless about how to go about the most important aspects, such as how to secure grants for employing staff etc. I have considered presenting my project to the government and also software companies (would like to partner with someone like Sun Microsystems).

If anyone could shed any light on the subject I would be eternally grateful, as I honestly believe I have an excellent idea but am clueless how to go about it.

Many thanks
