Animal Welfare Grants

Submitted by MoiraC on 11 January, 2008 - 14:29.

Hi

Can anyone please help?

I am a volunteer at a dog rescue centre in Scotland. I have been asked to look at grants to help fund essential work needed at the kennels as we do not receive financial assistance from any organisations. Since Christmas I have spent hours looking at websites for grants but apart from one, animal welfare is excluded from them all. Is there somewhere I can find a list of websites for grants aimed at animal welfare or can someone please steer me in the right direction? All suggestions will be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Moira

Animal Welfare Grants

Hi

I have come across this Trust which funds Animal Welfare.

The Edna Linnell Charitable TRudt

Somerfield House

I got the details of this Trust from the Directory Invisible Grantmakers 2008. Its about £85 but well worth it. To order a copy contact 020-7704 6802

Hi Moira,
I'd be really interested to know how you get on with this.I do fundraising for local charities on a freelance basis but haven't yet worked with an animal charity. I hope to be shortly. For other charities I use regional funding search organisations for starters, so in Sheffield, South Yorkshire Funding Advice Bureau, or in Derbyshire, Derbyshire 4 Funding. Your local CVS should be able to tell you how to access a local funding search.
In practice the search will throw up national funders as well as local ones. There will still be a lot of sifting to do but at least you will know you have valid starting points. The problem with directories is you have so many possibilities. A funding search will point you to the ones you have a chance with
Please do post again if you have any luck.

Until the latest Act Animal

Until the latest Act Animal Welfare was not a Charitable Purpose (under English/Welsh law - not sure about Scotland!) This is, in part at least, why there are relatively few Trusts who will fund it.

However, I think that, if I were in your position, I'd be looking for wealthy individuals to sponsor aspects of the work - not forgetting animal feed producers, pet shop owners, other animal-related businesses. You don't have the confidentiality issues that beset human welfare organisations, and a bit of sponsor branding can be quite an attrcative proposition.

Local organisations

It can be worth checking the annual reports of other local charities to see which trusts support your area. Then research those trusts to see if they support your type of work.

And check other animal welfare charities around the country, see who supports them, then see if they will cover your area.

Local council for voluntary service (CVS) offices tend to be pretty good at searching for grants. Some councils also have external funding people that can help too.

Some of us use the printed major trust directories, and/or trust search sites such as www.trustfunding.org.uk - the trouble with fundraising is that money has to be spent to get money in. :)
Seriously, there are grants out there. Funders tend to be willing to support things, often the oddest things, if it meets their requirements.
Many a 'no' is given, but just means that much closer to the next 'yes'.

Animal Welfare Grants

Hi Moira

I have had a previous grant from The Robertson Trust http://www.therobertsontrust.org.uk/ and I note that they will consider animal welfare.

I am not sure from your post as to whether you have access to any directory's at all. If not see if you can get a copy of the Directory of Social Change. Have you also looked at at GuideStar UK which I think is free http://www.guidestar.org.uk/index.aspx

and may help your search.

Animal Welfare Grants

Hi Joanna

The only directory's I have are ones I have found by search engines. Unfortunately after looking through them for hours I have only found one that considers animal welfare.

Thankyou for your help, I will let you know how I get on.

Many Thanks

Animal Welfare Grants

Hi Moira

Have you checked local libraries or voluntary sector umbrella/advisory groups for relevant fundraising guides/CDs., etc?

Some libraries subscribe to KnowUK, a package of reference "books". KnowUK includes the SCVO directory of grant-making trusts. Once you join a library that subscribes to KnowUK, you can use it from any PC anywhere.

Use the advance search function on the OSCR website - www.oscr.org.uk. You can select "advancement of animal welfare" under purposes, possibly using a minimum income figure to screen out smaller trusts, then trawl through the results for possible grantmakers

I hope that this helps

Good Luck
