Art, Heritage Property and Philanthropy:
A discussion of how charities and advisors can enable wealthy donors to make the most of their arts and heritage assets

Discussion leader: James Carleton, Farrer & Co.

With predictions of price falls within Contemporary, Modern and Impressionist works in the New York art markets over the last few weeks having proved largely illusory, art (or certain categories of art) continues to be viewed as an alternative asset class for the world's rich. In the form of pre-eminent "masterpieces" it also continues to attract purchasers who, in addition to enjoying the aesthetic aspects of ownership, may also wish to have the cachet of owning something unique and irreplaceable. As moths to a lamp, art works and heritage assets will continue to attract the world's rich.

Recent examples of philanthropy, such as the Simon Sainsbury bequest to the National and Tate Galleries, shows how donors can use tax efficient bodies as part of their planned giving strategies and this roundtable will seek to explore some of the more commonly used tax planning strategies for donating art works to charities in England & Wales. It will also touch upon how vendors looking at the high prices being commanded in the art market may look to benefit certain UK heritage bodies, while reducing their own tax exposure on a sale of an art work or heritage asset.
