EAPG London Roundtable - Wednesday 19 November 2008. 5.15pm welcome for 5.30-7.00pm

Banking, Wealth and Philanthropy
A discussion of recent developments in Germany and Luxembourg impacting charitable giving and international philanthropy

Discussion leader: Kärim Chatti and Martin Wozignoj, HSH Nordbank Private Banking, Germany / Luxembourg

Germany and its citizens are the wealthiest nation in Europe, and Germany is also home to a growing number of foundations. This session will discuss contemporary aspects of wealth, banking and philanthropy in Germany and put them into perspective.

Kärim and Martin will present the main factors motivating donors to give both within Germany and across its borders, examine how philanthropy and charitable giving are changing in Germany, and discuss the degree to which this reflects wider changes in Europe as a whole. They will also comment on how philanthropy is impacting the role of advisors to wealthy individuals (solicitors, accountants and bankers) in Germany and Luxembourg, and when and why wealth advisors raise the topic of philanthropy with clients. Finally, they will explore the opportunities for cross-border giving in Germany and Europe.

Discussion to include:
* The main features of the German foundations and recent legislative changes of note in Germany and Luxemburg
* German foundations: developments and trends
* Transnational tax aspects from a banking perspective
* Luxembourg based tax-solutions in accordance with EU law (e.g. SOPARFI / FSP)
* Banking secrecy in Luxembourg (both advantages and solutions) for private clients in combination with cross-border giving
