The University of the Witwatersrand (‘Wits’) is one of the leading research and teaching universities in South Africa. Based in Johannesburg, the most powerful economic hub on the continent, Wits is a dynamic, metropolitan university, drawing top-quality students from all quarters of society in South Africa and abroad. Wits enjoys good relations with industry and the State, and is acknowledged as one of the leading institutions charting the future role of higher education in South Africa.
Over the past five years, Wits has undergone a dramatic regeneration, with a wide variety of new academic, endowment and capital projects being undertaken. Central to this metamorphosis has been the creation of the Advancement Division of the University, a comprehensive and integrated external relations function under a dedicated Deputy Vice Chancellor and with the active and personal support of the Vice Chancellor.
The University now wishes to appoint a Director for its Development & Fundraising Office to lead the major gifts function, fine-tune the systems of the office, and consolidate the skills of its staff to complete the professionalism of the unit. With established credentials within the educational development environment, the successful candidate will have line management responsibility for the External Client Relations Manager, the Internal Client Services Manager and the head of the Research unit and will be responsible for all aspects of the delivery of donor development and project management.
This is an exciting and challenging position which will ideally suit candidates wishing to make a demonstrable impact in a dynamic and forward-looking environment. A highly attractive salary and benefits package will be available to the successful applicant which, with a low local cost of living, will allow for an enviable quality of life and an opportunity to enjoy to the full the many natural, social and sporting advantages of life in South Africa.
Offered initially with a three year contract, the position is open to candidates of any nationality who can show the requisite skills and experience and who will relish a fast-moving and challenging role which aims to make a very real difference to the future development of the University.
The closing date for applications is May 23. International candidates’ interviews will be held in London (UK) on June 20 and for local candidates in Johannesburg soon thereafter.
