Giving is Good for You, by John Nickson (cover detail)

John Nickson, former head of fundraising at the British Council, English National Opera, The Royal Academy of Arts and the Tate, has published a new book that looks at what can be done to encourage all of us, including the wealthy elite, to give more money and time to good causes.

‘Giving is Good for You’, published last week, argues that growing inequality and poverty is a threat to everyone. He points to the ‘generous minority’ who are leading the way and arguing to their peers and friends that, in addition to public benefit, giving can be personally fulfilling.

Helene Kennedy QC says of Nickson that he “knows more about philanthropy than anyone I know and [he] explains that altruism and generous acts of giving are vital to ethical societies.”

Over the past 35 years he has worked as a trustee, mentor and adviser to education, arts and development charities, and has experience as a donor: for example, he supports a music scholarship at the Royal College of Music in London where he chairs the Development Steering Group and is a member of Council.
